What is hybrid HVAC?

It’s a hybrid heating and cooling system that pairs an electric heat pump with a natural gas furnace. The heat pump works to heat and cool your home efficiently until the outside temperature drops significantly and the system proactively switches to your furnace.

What is the lowest temperature that heat pumps can function in?

Depending on the specific equipment in use, heat pumps can operate all the way down to between -25 and -30 degrees Celsius. However, the colder it gets, the less efficient it becomes for the heat pump to heat your home, since the amount of heat it generates decreases as the outdoor temperature drops.

How does a heat pump compare to an air conditioner?

A heat pump looks similar to a conventional AC unit, with the addition of a stand that keeps the condenser inside away from any ice buildup on the ground. The key difference is that a heat pump not only cools your home in the summer but can also heat it in the winter!

How much can I save on my gas bill by using a hybrid heating system?

There isn’t one number for everyone. The amount you’ll save depends on a range of factors, including the efficiency of the heat pump, the age and efficiency of your furnace, outdoor temperatures and the set point where the system switches. Depending on local weather, you could heat your home exclusively with electricity using the heat pump, while during more frigid conditions you might only use your gas furnace.

Do I have to replace all of my current equipment?

No. If your furnace is in good condition, you can simply replace your air conditioner with a heat pump that will work in conjunction with the furnace for a reliable, all-season home energy system. What happens when I sell my home?

There’s nothing to worry about. If you’re leasing the equipment, the terms and agreement will be transferred to the new owners when you sell your home. Your real estate lawyer will handle the details of this process once the sale of your home is completed.
